Synopsis: Amber Tate believes the worst thing she’ll suffer in life is dealing with the unrequited love she feels for her brother’s best friend, Rylen Fite. She also believes war is something unfortunate that happens places far, far away from her rural Nevada town. She’s wrong on both counts.
When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed—everything from food and water sources to technology and communications are compromised. Without leadership, the nation is split between paralysis and panic, but Amber isn’t one to hide or watch helplessly. She’s determined to put her nursing skills to use, despite the danger, even if it means working alongside the man she can never have.
In this first installment of NY Times bestselling author, Wendy Higgins’s debut New Adult series, a frighteningly realistic apocalyptic America is brought to life, entwined with searing romantic tension that will leave you eager for more.
I absolutely love Wendy Higgins' writing. I first discovered her through a Wattpad story where the Sweet Evil book were mentioned. The series caught my eye so I decided to buy the first book to see if I like it or not. I adored it and immediately ordered the next books. The Great Hunt and See Me are both on my TBR list and I'm looking forward to reading those as well. I was browsing on Wattpad and saw that Wendy had posted something new. It was the start of a book called Unknown. I was hooked from the very beginning and was extremely excited to learn it would be coming out soon. I have the ebook version of it because I wanted to read it right then and there. I read it in a day.
Luckily, Wendy responds to people on Twitter. I heard that the second book (Unrest) would be coming out in winter of 2017. I immediately wanted to know if that meant it would be coming out in January/February of 2017 or December of 2017. I asked Wendy on Twitter, and thankfully it will be coming out on February 16th. I can hardly wait for February, I can't imagine how hard it would be do wait until next December.
The first 1/4 or so of this book is comprised of Amber, Tater, and Rylen's childhood. It starts when they all first meet. I thought it was awesome that Wendy included that scene because it gives the background history that most books don't. I've read several apocalyptic type books but this one is the only one that took place in our time period. That actually kind of freaked me out because all of the other ones seemed like something like that could never happen currently. But in Unknown, something like that actually could happen right now.
Amber Tate is just your normal girl who's in love with her brother's best friend, Rylen Fite. Other than the fact that she thinks Rylen doesn't return her feelings, her life is pretty good. That is until an unknown organization attacks amusement parks all over the country. After that, nothing really happens for a while and people start to calm down about the crazy events that happened that day. Almost every leader in the country is at a meeting... together.... what can go wrong? The unknown organization strikes again, this time bombing major cities and killing all of the leaders in that meeting. The whole world goes into a state of shock. Then chaos. After the bombings, all electricity is down. People begin to panic and start to loot stores. When Amber and her family seem to have lost everything, her grandfather pulls a trick out of his sleeve. He has a secret stash of canned food, bottled waters, and weapons.
Both Amber's brother, Jacob (Tater), and Rylen are in the military which gives them the ability to help. But they aren't the only ones with something to contribute, Amber is determined to put her emergency room experiences to good use.
The book isn't really focused on romance. The characters are focused on surviving, as they should be considering the world is falling apart around them.
I really did enjoy this book and I highly recommend it! :)
